About Cupid

"Cupid" is a song by American singer Sam Cooke, released on May 16, 1961. It charted at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 20 on the Hot R&B Sides chart; the track performed best in the United Kingdom, peaking at number seven on the UK Singles Chart. Cooke's producers had asked him to write a song for a girl they had seen on a Perry Como TV show — but once they heard her sing, they kept "Cupid" for Cooke himself. It was Cooke's idea to drop in the sound of an arrow being fired "straight to my lover's heart. " Personnel on the recording included Cooke's session regulars Clifton White and Rene Hall on guitar, Clifford Hills on bass, Earl Palmer on drums and Joseph Gibbons on guitar and banjo. "Cupid" was ranked at number 452 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". AllMusic critic Bill Janovitz described the track as a "perfect pop song" which combines "Latin, R&B, jazz, and mainstream pop elements". more »

Cupid draw back your bow And let your arrow go Straight to my lover's heart for me, for me Cupid please hear my cry And let your arrow fly Straight to my lover's heart for me Now I don't mean to bother you but I'm in distress There's danger of me losing all of my happiness For I love a girl who doesn't know I exist And this you can fix, so Cupid draw back your bow And let your arrow go Straight to my lover's heart for me Nobody but me Cupid please hear my cry And let your arrow fly Straight to my lover's heart for me Now, Cupid if your arrow make a love storm for me I promise I will love her until eternity I know between the two of us her heart we can steal Help me if you will, so Cupid draw back your bow And let your arrow go Straight to my lover's heart for me Nobody but me Cupid please hear my cry And let your arrow fly Straight to my lover's heart for me Now, Cupid, don't you hear me Calling you? I need ya Cupid help me, I need ya
